A Calling

In A Calling, an abeng—a traditional Jamaican Maroon instrument used to call people to a gathering place—pays homage to Nova Scotia's earliest Black migrants.

A Calling was commissioned by the Ecology Action Centre for ‘50 Things’, an app-guided interactive art adventure curated by Zuppa Theatre in celebration of EAC’s 50th Anniversary (the work's app-guided audio/visual recording was developed in collaboration with writer Shauntay Grant). Exhibited at the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia, A Calling became a site of reflection—an invitation to explore and reflect on the history and culture of Black Nova Scotians, and to consider the resilience of historic Black communities that have endured marginalization, discrimination and environmental racism.
